September is an in-between month. Summer isn't quite over yet, but at the same time, appointments, projects, and routines are returning. After weeks where many things could be a bit lighter and more spontaneous, the focus shifts back to the future.
Perhaps that's precisely why smoky quartz fits so well into this month for us.
Its smoky grey and brown tones already evoke autumn. At the same time, smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding, stability, and clarity – qualities that don't necessarily have to sound like retreat. On the contrary: those who feel well-grounded can use their energy more purposefully.
What Smoky Quartz Actually Is
Smokey quartz is a variety of quartz – one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Chemically, quartz consists of silicon and oxygen. In its pure form, it is colourless; however, tiny changes and trace elements can create completely different colour worlds. The quartz family includes rock crystal, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz – and smoky quartz.
It's particularly interesting how smoky quartz gets its colour.
Aluminum can replace a small part of the silicon in the crystal lattice. This alone does not make the stone dark. Only through natural irradiation, to which the mineral is exposed over geological periods, do so-called colour centers develop. They change the light absorption of the crystal and create the characteristic smoky nuances. Depending on the intensity, the spectrum ranges from transparent grey to warm brown to almost black.
Its colour is thus, in a sense, a visible result of time and change.
A beautiful thought for a month that itself represents transition.

From Grounding to Movement
In crystal healing traditions, smoky quartz has long been associated with grounding, inner stability and letting go of thoughts that weigh us down. These associations are part of a much longer cultural history: for centuries, people have attributed particular meanings and qualities to stones – in Europe, for example, in medieval writings such as Hildegard of Bingen’s Physica.
There is currently no robust clinical evidence that wearing smoky quartz produces specific psychological or energetic effects. At the same time, quartz does have measurable physical properties. It is piezoelectric, which means it can generate an electrical charge when subjected to mechanical pressure – an effect that is widely used in technology and is also being explored in biomedical research. Whether, and in what way, this has any relevance to a stone worn on the body has not been scientifically established.
For us, this is precisely where the fascination lies: in the connection between an extraordinary natural material, centuries-old symbolism and the personal meaning we choose to give it today.
A stone can become a personal symbol. Something we see or touch and thus connect to a specific intention. The smoky quartz doesn't decide what happens next. But it can remind us of what we have set out to do.
Especially in September, we particularly like the traditional symbolism of smoky quartz: first ground, then focus – and finally get back to doing.
Because after the summer, we may not immediately need more speed. But a moment to decide what we want to use our energy for.
September: Back to Ideas
The transition to autumn is often associated with retreat. We see something else in it.
September can be a particularly creative month. We return with new impressions, have gained distance from some routines, and perhaps suddenly see things differently. Ideas that arose somewhere in the background during the summer are given space again.
The only question is: Which ones do we actually want to pursue?
This is where grounding turns into movement. Don't start everything at once. Instead, select, focus, and give an idea enough attention so that something can emerge from it.
Ground. Focus. Create.
Three small steps that fit well with smoky quartz for us – and perhaps even better with September.
A Small Smoky Quartz Ritual
It doesn't take much.
At the beginning of the day, take a moment and think about one thing you really want to move forward in the coming weeks. Not five projects. One.
Hold a smoky quartz in your hand or place it visibly on your desk. Formulate for yourself: What is the one step today that will move me forward?
Then begin.
The ritual may only last a minute. The decisive factor is not the stone alone, but the conscious interruption of autopilot.

Smoky Quartz to Take Away
Smoky quartz is also one of my personal favourites, by the way. I've been wearing my SO+ bracelet with smoky quartz practically continuously for over a year – at work, traveling, sleeping, and even swimming. It has long since become more than just a piece of jewellery for me: a familiar companion and a small reminder in everyday life.
This is precisely the idea behind our SO+ Burst Your Energy bracelet with smoky quartz. The smoky quartz doesn't become something that has to be taken out for a ritual. It accompanies you throughout the day – as a piece of jewellery and as a small tactile reminder on your wrist.
Perhaps you touch it before an important conversation. When you're jumping between too many tasks. Or at the moment when a good idea needs courage to be implemented.
Not as a promise that a stone will change something for us. But as a reminder that we ourselves can change something.
And perhaps that's exactly the energy we need for September.
Welcome back. Let’s create something worth our energy.
